Amazon has a men's tauntaun hoodie. With EARS.

The inside lining is a stylized line drawing of intestines.

This is the best thing I've ever seen in my life.

I want to talk about Mereel's introduction, because I think it's one of my absolute favorites in the whole series. It's like the Jaws theme in written form.

all quotes are from Chapter 18 of Triple Zero by Karen Traviss )

I just really love this introduction on the whole. It's so very, very Mereel, and I think it says a ton about how his character operates in just a few barely-there scenes, how much of what Mereel does is off-page, and where he's like...this horror movie monster looming up in the background which then gets tucked away behind a cheery smile like a sleight of hand trick as soon as you turn to look, hiding so many of the implications of his actions and sudden appearance in a performance*, and it's one of my favorite parts of the book.

*I say performance with the understanding that Mereel absolutely is happy to see his dad again, but with the belief that Mereel's capable of using his own perfectly genuine emotions to his own advantage because Mereel is...very ruthless, actually. The sentiment isn't the performance, the way he chooses to express that sentiment is. Mereel's fun.

Was flicking through my Order 66 notes, and we know Kal has pictures from Kamino of the Nulls and some of his commando squads, including Theta. Photos are important. You don't even usually realize how important until you're looking at them.

You think he shares them with Omega? They would never think to ask, probably wouldn't even realize it was a thing, but I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t if it came up, even if he doesn’t think of it himself. Niner seeing Two-Eight again, and the squad he lost to Geonosis, and being struck by how young they all look to him now (they were, what, physically eighteen when they died? And Two-Eight even younger?), and Darman being able to see Theta, and Fi.

You think he’d have shared those pictures with Fi while he was recovering?

If Vau was the one taking the pictures, that would mean he probably has both of Atin's squads, too. Pictures of Sev. And all the commando squads out there who are the subject of those photos but don't get to know they exist.

There isn't much point to this, lol, it just made me think about these guys seeing those photos the first time.

Watch Atin promptly take up photography with a fervor. Niner puts them on the fridge.

And I will tell you my:
  • First impression
  • Impression now
  • Favorite moment
  • Idea for a story
  • Unpopular opinion
  • Favorite relationship
  • Favorite headcanon

Delta calls Sev “psycho” and variations thereof a lot--like, a lot--and I’m gonna half-assedly speculate, ‘cause what the hell else am I going to do with a morning off, really.

I wanted to talk a little about the hauling 8-year-olds into active war zones thing, and how I’ve sort of come to the conclusion that it’s not even remotely standard practice. It seems to me it’s more likely very specifically a “those Skiratas are weird as fuck but they keep to themselves so we don’t really do anything about it” kind of a deal instead.

Prime evidence: Munin.

images. so many images.  )

And, okay, I call this Kal Skirata Critical, but really it's Munin Skirata Critical with Kal getting hit by proxy.

Also I refuse to make a Munin tag. Nope.
So I've only ever bound one book so far, a little more than a year ago, but I'm still very proud of it. I used various youtube videos and Hand Bookbinding: A Manual of Instruction by Aldren A. Watson (and a whole lot of Fear).

Images under the cut )

It's pretty rough, but it's held up okay! I'm hoping I'll be able to get back into it soon.

This is not meta this is just giggles.

My absolute favorite scene in 501st is the one where the Nulls go to retrieve Niner and Darman only to have them both behave like cats who wanted the door open:

image

Jaing knows what’s up. He’s not wrong. They really are the two most dramatic members of Omega squad. Darman of the “I’m going to kick my sergeant out of the crashing aircraft against orders” school of thought and Niner, Mr. “We’ll believe Darman’s dead when HELL FREEZES OVER” and “I’m gonna FIGHT A NULL over ETHICS in the MIDDLE OF A MISSION I don’t GIVE a FUCK”.

This is going to be a five act tragecomedy if it kills them, basically. They know no other way.

Okay, I can talk about an Order 66 thing now.

I think Niner is one of the only characters in the series we see able to go toe-to-toe with Kal, and I wanted to talk about it. That’s it, that’s the post.

Here’s why:

image

The chapter header is from THE biggest manipulator in the Star Wars franchise, about how he does what he does. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it leads into the chapter where Kal Skirata, self-confessed manipulator extraordinaire, is forced to face actual consequences for just a few of his shittier actions. The chapter is supposed to be about Darman vs Kal Skirata, but actually the confrontation that interested me the most was the one he had with Niner.

One of my favorite Gaftikar subplots is A’den deciding that he and Atin are going to be best friends. Atin’s permission not required.

It’s like watching A’den try his damnedest to make friends with the world’s meanest cat.

I collected the whole thing.

All right, so this is one of those scenes where I could never quite figure out the motivations, but I think I have an idea now?

Skirata makes a point to note that before this they had zero problems from Boss. He was taking his tasking well and wasn’t rocking the boat with anyone. He was calm and professional, if not content. It’s only now that he starts getting agitated. Why?

Something I forgot:

Fi's thing about control.

Man does NOT like when the reins are out of his hands. And he can get snippy about it, too:

image

Including seconds before this when Fi was privately backseat sassing Scorch's setting of the charges even though Scorch was doing literally nothing wrong. Grumpy boy.

So I started my TripZip re-read with the Targets short because 1) timeline and 2) who’s gonna stop me

and while I was reading there was that whole scene where Kal Skirata decides to go in as a hostage and Ordo is like “uh...don’t?” and skirata’s like “nah i’m gonna” and then does and then fi almost shoots him and spends the rest of forever feeling horrifically guilty about it? I have thoughts about that. I’m still not entirely sure where I’m going with this but...uh...
