Congrats I agree on all points, though I usually judge Kal's abuse on a Doylist level rather than Watsonian: that it's a consequence of KT's genuine cluelessness about how a good parent treats their kids. So my Kal-bashing usually looks like "fuck, if only KT had actually recognized Kal for the bad parent he is and written him accordingly, the way she did Vau. He'd have been so much better as a character, because he'd be flawed and realistic instead of KT's grotesque Marty Stu wank fodder"

When I'm writing fic tho I def go at it from your angle

Yeah KT is a godawful person IRL, so odds are extremely high that she was completely unaware how emotionally abusive Kal is. I'm not kidding when I say he's her wank fodder; she was unironically writing him as an ideal man and the very epitome of loving fatherhood. Which. 😬 Long story short, she wasn't planning on turning the tables to reveal how awful he is, because she didn't see how awful he is. I kind of see the Repcomm books the way I see Firefly: I love them, but dear god I'm glad they got cancelled when they did. She's a really great example of how sometimes authors don't know shit about the stories they're telling.

But if it's better for you to examine Kal's story on an in-story level, then that's legit. I don't have a lot to say about it, mostly because I don't have many fic ideas in Repcomm, so I don't need to examine Kal on an in-story basis. If I had more fic ideas then I could probably talk more about it :P
